La costumbre devora las obras, la ropa, los muebles, la propia esposa y el miedo a la guerra... Y el arte existe para que podamos recobrar la sensación de vida; existe para hacerle a uno sentir cosas, para hacer lo pétreo pétreo. El propósito del arte es recrear la sensación de las cosas tal como las percibimos y no tal como las sabemos.
En una novela corriente se nos mostrará una descripción como si se describiese una fotografía. Si el escritor es hábil y minucioso incluso logrará transmitirnos con fidelidad la imagen de lo que desea mostrar. Pero la narración se convertirá en arte con mayúsculas si el autor, mediante sus palabras, logra que en ese rincón íntimo de nuestra mente se recree la sensación tal y como él la imagina. El verdadero artista consigue no solo evocar vívidas y perdurables sensaciones en nosotros, sino que nos pongamos en el lugar de los personajes y que experimentemos lo mismo que ellos sienten.
